ABOUT SHANGHAI JAZZ ENSEMBLE (CHINA) - A nostalgic glimpse into the sultry, sleezy, seductive world of 1920s' Chinese jazz - THE Old Shanghai form of jazz, once popular in the 1930s, is making a comeback thanks to a group of young, individually established and talented musicians from China. Currently the ensemble consists of 19 musicians, all in their 20s, led by Hong Kong-based Australian-born producer John Huie. The group has been busy performing around China as well as the world and in 2004 released an album, Shanghai Jazz: Musical Seductions from China's Age of Decadence. The musicians are lead vocalist Coco Zhao Ke, Carrie Zhang Le, Ginger Zheng Zhi Xiao , Rebecca Tu , pianist Huang JianYi, jazz chanteuse Erica Lee, violinist Pang Fei, trumpet player Fu Hua and Feng Yu Cheng, double bass Ren Yu Qing, drum bill pan, Clarinet Hu Jun, trombone Li Peng, tenor saxophone Zhang XiaoLu. Some of the hit songs include Old Shanghai's jazz classics De Bu Dao De Ai Qing (The Love You Can't Get), Wo Yao Ni De Ai (I Want Your Love) and Qing Ren De Yan Lei (Lover's Tears). |
