ABOUT TANGALGO (SCOTLAND/NEW ZEALAND/ITALY) - Dynamic and exuberant trio exploring the space between the passionate and dramatic tango, and spontaneous jazz - Formed in Edinburgh in 2003, Tangalgo came together to explore the space between Jazz and Tango. Not so much a piano trio as a three-headed musical instrument, we comprise musicians from Salsa Celtica, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and the Karine Polwart band. Sharing a love for the music of Astor Piazzolla, we began with radical re-arrangements of his tango scores, progressing quickly to evocative originals and adding a bit of free improvisation, latin groove and haunting classicism to the mix. These tight and exploratory arrangements help to move the piano trio format away from the classic jazz head/solo/head straitjacket. As they continue to develop this space, the band moves effortlessly from high drama to delicate introspection, lurking menacingly somewhere between the passion and drama of the tango and the unpredictability, improvisation and complexity of jazz. Over the last two years we have played the Glasgow, Edinburgh, Scarborough and Islay Jazz Festivals, as well as appearing regularly on the Scottish jazz scene. We have featured on BBC Radio 3 and Radio Scotland, and our debut album La Zucca Barucca has been played across the UK, Europe and North America. |
