HAMILTON DE HOLANDA (BRAZIL)
Brasilianos could be just a concert but is more it is also a musical manifest. From Brasil for Brasil and for the world"
On 4th & 5th April 2008 for the first time Malaysia will receive BRASILIANOS 2 part of the new Hamilton de Holanda Quintet`s world tour that envisions the value of diversity in music without boundaries never losing sight of the music's inherently Brazilian properties - think globally act locally. "This concert is a homage to the Brazilian people and his young musicians, that without taking notice are creating an authentic way to express their art - the Modern Instrumental Brazilian music, based in Brazilian elements and tradition without losing track of global issues. Citizens of the world, bringing to the universal pot the Brazilian`s flavor. Brasilianos 2 is homonymous to the new release CD based on the most important names in Brazilian Instrumental music like Hermeto Pascoal Pixinguinha, Baden Powell, Egberto Gismonti, Toninho Horta, Raphael Rabelo among others and in the world music like Jazz, Flamenco, Cuban and African, The majority of the songs could be executed with the same fluency by a simple whistle or by an orchestra, eloquent melodies with rhythm, harmony and improvisation – singularities of the sophisticate Brazilian`s music (Musica Popular Brasileira)" Hamilton de Holanda
At age 31, Hamilton de Holanda is arguably the most virtuosic mandolinist in the world today. Performing on a 10-string version of the instrument, Hamilton de Holanda fronts Hamilton de Holanda Quintet featuring Daniel Santiago on acoustic guitar, André Vasconcellos on electric bass, Márcio Bahia on drums, and Gabriel Grossi on the chromatic harmonica. They just receive the most prestigious Brazilian music award for the best instrumental group of 2007 (similar to the Grammy) and Hamilton the best performer.
Brasilianos 2, while recognizably Brazilian, does reach far across national borders. Is what happens when conservatory-level technical and compositional chops meet eclecticism and an open ear for global trends - athletic and dense music that's international in appeal yet true to its country's best antecedents. On Brasilianos, "Hamilton de Holanda and band establish their superior jazz chops, executing complex time changes and deftly navigating tricky melodic and harmonic variations. Hamilton de Holanda is a speed demon on the track, spilling out rippling lead runs, which the supporting musicians have no trouble keeping up with. But technique and tempo are not the only tricks they have up their sleeves but the bulk of the set is gentler and more studied, concerned with conveying emotion rather than impressing. Drawing on, but not enslaved by, the Brazilian samba tradition " Billboard Flamenco-reminiscent arpeggios; devilish high-speed syncopations applying extreme duress on ensemble work only to come off like a dream; unexpected time gates; scintillating tremolos following bass lines in lock step; sophisticated harmonic progressions; dreamy Tropicana melodies; sneaky percussion art; gorgeous harmonica riffs; suave guitar work. This will be a concert not to be missed.
