VOCAL ACROBATICS BY KEY ELEMENTS AT GENTING JAZZ FEST
The Genting International Jazz Festival enters its 2nd year in 2008.
Last year’s festival was such a resounding success that it had to move to a bigger venue within the Genting Highlands Resort for the next one.
The aim is to have as many different jazz styles brought to one stage at any one time.
One of the bands this year comes from Singapore. KEY ELEMENTS, consisting of 6 singers – Benedict Goh, Chua Hui Lian, Jason Ong, Susanna Pua, Chua Kim Beng and Vaughan Tan – will be at Genting with their brand of a capella or vocal jazz singing.
Vocal jazz is a technique where the human voice is used as an instrument. Complicated twists and melismatic turns of melody, specific timbres and ranges, stylistic treatment of the lyrics – everything is milked to produce an incredible effect just by the voice or voices alone.
It also requires great stage presence to pull off, as well as a broad sense of theatre and good dramatic timing.
Key Elements has all this and more.
The band does most their own arrangements in-house. Three of their members are prolific arrangers and spend a lot of time coming up with innovative approaches to existing songs, giving it new life and a new twist. One of their recent engagements saw them doing a series of successful concerts in Seoul, Korea.
Jason, Vaughan and Benedict each have their own approaches to arranging the band’s repertoire. As a result, within a performance, one will get to hear different styles and weaving of textures, each one distinctive from the next.
Key Elements sings in English, Spanish and Mandarin and might even throw in a Japanese song or two. Their brand of jazz will be a great contrast to the other bands that are also coming in 2008.
The festival falls on April 4th and 5th.
Tickets for the festival are going at RM100 for a one day pass and RM150 for a 2 day package.
Each night, there will be 5 bands playing. The show starts at 7.15 pm.
Information will be up on the website www.gentingjazz.com. The hotline number to call is 03-2718 1118.
