THE BEST OF DIXIELAND WITH NEANDERS JAZZ BAND AT GENTING
Dixieland music, usually known as the ‘original jazz stuff’, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in the early years of the 20th century.
Wind instruments were the main timbres – trumpet, clarinet, etc – tossing the melodies to and fro with a great deal of showy improvisation, sometimes playing together in complicated polyphonic harmonies.
From marching rhythms (think of “When The Saints Come Marching In”) to ragtime and blues, it was a lively community music with an inbuilt swing and swagger.
Its origins, of course, lay in the music of African Americans and the term “Dixieland” is sometimes frowned upon for suggesting “black” music.
So it is in the name of global intermingling and cultural emancipation that a completely white band from Denmark is coming to the Genting International Jazz Festival, playing music that is joyously and gleefully Dixieland.
The Neanders Jazz Band is a six-man band. It was founded in 1978 by Hans Christian Rosendal who plays the clarinet in the band. The wind section is backed by a rhythm section of banjo, guitar, double bass and drums.
They have played in many festivals in Europe and are regular annual performers at the Tonder Festival. They have even played at New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival.
It will be their first time here in Malaysia together with 9 other bands for the festival on the 4th and 5th of April 2008.
A 1-day ticket is priced at RM100 and a 2-day pass costs RM150.
Information on packages and ticket purchase can be found at www.gentingjazz.com. The hotline number for the festival is 03-2718 1118.
All the bands that are slotted to play for this year are performing very different genres of jazz music. Expect to hear African jazz, blues, Brazilian mandolin improvisations, Caribbean jazz, big band Celtic-Cuban salsa, Jamaican reggae-jazz and much, much more.
We trust you will enjoy the lively charismatic performance by these natural entertainers – the Neanders Jazz Band.
