The Genting International Jazz Festival is back! And this year, it promises to be BIGGER and BETTER. From 4th to 5th April 2008, jazz enthusiasts and music lovers will get to experience a plethora of jazz music performed by the very the best from all over the world at the prestigious Genting International Showroom, Genting Highlands Resort!

In 2007, lovers of jazz were completely entertained by the virtuosity of great musicians such as Cubanismo, Acoustique, Tangalgo and Shanghai Jazz Ensemble. This year, welcome to the peak a selection of jazz talents that will wow you all through the night with their music and stage presence. The list of musicians* for 2008 is:

Friday, 4th April:

jUnKoFuNc
(Malaysia)
A cross section of some of the best jazz musicians of Malaysia led by Albert Sirimal

jUnKoFuNc is a project band conceptualized by renowned Malaysian guitarist Albert Sirimal and Asia’s master bass player  Andy Peterson in mid-2007 and is made up of  highly talented individuals, masters of their craft, getting together to explore, inspire and push each other to their musical limits. The genre chosen for this project is funk. The band consists of Albert Sirimal on guitars and main vocals, Andy Peterson on bass, John Ashley Thomas on drums, Justin on keyboards, Badar on percussions and Ahmad Muriz on saxophone.





Ben’s Belinga Quartet
(Cameroon/France)
Afro-soul jazz with saxophonist Ben – a mixture of music from the West Indies

Cameroonian saxophonist Ben Belinga, a self-taught musician, draws his inspiration from jazz greats such as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, King Curtis and others. The talented musician has travelled extensively from Europe to the USA bringing with him one clear mission –"African music must rid itself of the clichés that hold's it back (the Tam Tam, earthy stereotypes...). It must expand its horizons. The goal is to play a music solidly anchored in the cultural heritage, traditional and contemporary, of Black people everywhere”.





Diamond Dave & The Doodaddies

Chicago-styled rootsy blues, very much tongue-in-cheek

The Doodaddies are a four piece Chicago style blues band featuring the red hot guitar chops of Dave Brewer, the sensational harmonica playing of 'Diamond' Dave Billing, bassist Bob Thomson and drummer Yugon ‘Chob’ Chobanoff. The Doodaddies cover a solid selection of uplifting grooves including swinging shuffles,soul, boogaloo,'cry in your beer' blues and more.With a number of live shows and two CD releases including the recently released (Jan 2006) 'Lonely Part Of Town' the Doodaddies prove not that only are blues are strong and far-reaching, but that its future of the blues is bright!





Hamilton De Holanda
(Brazil)
Classy quintet led by one of the most virtuosic mandolin players of today

At age 31, Hamilton de Holanda is arguably the most virtuosic mandolinist in the world today. Performing on a 10-string version of the instrument, Hamilton de Holanda fronts the Hamilton de Holanda quintet featuring Daniel Santiago on acoustic guitar, André Vasconcellos on electric bass, Márcio Bahia on drums, and Gabriel Grossi on the chromatic harmonica. They just received the most prestigious Brazilian Music Award (a Brazilian equivalent of the Grammy) for the best instrumental group of 2007 with Hamilton awarded as best performer.





Salsa Celtica

Dynamic big band with an eclectic mix of Latin salsa with a Celtic groove

Salsa Celtica is a unique gathering of musicians from two very different musical cultures who stir up a storm by fusing Latin and Celtic sounds into a high-energy mix of unforgettable musical explorations.  Once seen, never forgotten, it is their music gets into the blood and blows away the boundaries that define where musical genres begin and end.

Key Elements
(Singapore)
Get tapping to the sweet sounds of harmonic a cappela

Formed in early 2001, the a cappella group Key Elements is made up of members from key elements of three older a cappella groups: Chua Kim Beng, Jason Ong and Vaughan Tan were formerly from the pioneering outfit IN-A-CHORD, Chua Hui Lian and Susanna Pua were from Christian group bcoz, while Benedict Goh was one of the founders of Impromptu. Although Key Elements is known for its repertoire of jazz standards, the group is equally comfortabledoing other genres, from pop to do-wop to songs in Mandarin and other languages.





Tangora

Caressing female vocals backed by breathtaking jazz sextet

Tangora is a young woman Franco-Italian from Marseille, singer, author and composer. Born in a family of music lovers, Tangora embarked on many geographic and ethnic voyages and would like unite the world through music and love. Together with her great ensemble of professional and renowned musicians, her mellifluous and richly sensuous vocals will transport you to ethereal dimensions and back.





Neander’s Jazz Band
(Denmark)A sextet with a great sense of humour in New Orleans style

Neanders Jazz Band was founded in the southern part of Jutland, Denmark in 1978 by the clarinet player Hans Christian Rosendal. Soon after he had a six-piece band with clarinet, trumpet, trombone, banjo/guitar, double bass, and drums. From the beginning their musical style was rooted in old-school jazz with inspiration from Kid Ory, George Louis, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet.

Throughout the years their repertoire has extended to different music styles, but is still largely inspired by traditional jazz music. Neanders Jazz Band has been playing all over Denmark in clubs and festivals. The band has also been on tours in Germany, England and Sweden.





Schalk Joubert And The Three Continents Sextet
(Norway, Sweden, Spain, Africa, Australia)
Rhythms from Africa and harmonies from Europe – a heady mixture

Young South African bass player Schalk Joubert is the product of his mixed cultural heritage. His influences are the rhythms of Africa and the harmonies of Europe. While still studying for a psychology degree he also attended the Stellenbosch School of Music because he wanted to play the bass and get involved in recording. He set about offering his services to different producers and studios and began to make a name as a session musician. It was not long before he had a number of awards to his name and turned to producing albums for other artistes.

His latest group, The Three Continents Sextet, comprises a brass section from Scandinavia, a rhythm section from Africa, and a percussionist from Australia.
 






Tighten Up! Jazz Jamaica with special guest Myrna Hague

A joyful mix of jazz standards, ska, reggae and Jamaican songs from this exhilarating dance band

The award-winning Jazz Jamaica is back with a brand new set: Tighten Up! raising the roof with the formidable power and sheer exuberance of this all-star band. Led by bassist, Gary Crosby – nephew of the great Jamaican guitarist, Ernest Ranglin – Jazz Jamaica is guaranteed to get you on your feet and dancing with their special blend of rock steady rhythms, ska beats, pumping reggae grooves interweaved with sophisticated jazz swing!

Joining this phenomenal band for an exclusive show is their very special guest from Jamaica, Myrna Hague, one of the pioneers of Lovers Rock and star of the classic hit ‘What About Me?’
