SCHALK JOUBERT AND THE THREE
CONTINENTS SEXTET (SWEDEN,
NORWAY, AUSTRALIA, SPAIN, AFRICA)
Young South African born bass player Schalk Joubert is the product of his mixed cultural heritage. His influences are the rhythms of Africa and the harmony of Europe.
While still studying for a psychology degree he also attended the Stellenbosch School of Music because he wanted to play the bass and he wanted to get involved in recording. He set about offering his services to different producers and studios and began to make a name as a session musician and it was not long before he had a number of awards to his name and turned to producing albums for other artists.
He rose through the ranks of the live music scene pretty swiftly. His first success was with the group, The Sons of Trout, who distinguished themselves with several recordings and Eurpoean gigs as pop/rockers with original repertoire and a commitment to songwriting of a high standard.
Despite studios calling for his time he saw to it that he did not lose contact with the stage and live audiences. He is booked regularly to tour in Benelux and Holland. He has appeared in France and the UK. Some of the artists he has worked with include Anton Goosen, Gert Vlok Nel, Michelle Shocked and Vusi Mahlasela. While touring he has performed with players in the jazz scene.
His latest group traveling under the name, The 3 Continents Sextet comprises a brass section from Scandinavia, a rhythm section from Africa, and a percussionist from Australia.
KAYAMANDI
His new CD released in Southern Africa, Benelux and Germany, entitled Kaymandi is so mature that one can hardly believe that it is a debut release. The music is described as World Fusion. It is a fusion of jazz, pop, world and traditional sounds. It is a fusion of the talent of some premier performers produced, arranged and largely composed by Schalk himself.
